Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes are a class of linear block codes which provide near capacity performance on a large collection of data transmission and storage channels while simultaneously admitting implementing decoder. We will cover the design of LDPC codes with optimal degree distributions via constrained pseudo-random matrix construction. We will also review some of the other LDPC code construction techniques which have appeared in the literature. The encoding problem for such LDPC codes will be presented and certain special classes of LDPC codes which resolve the encoding problem will be introduced. Finally, the iterative message-passing decoding algorithm (and certain simplifications) which provides near-optimal performance will be presented.
