In the attached simulink model, we present different control strategies for controlling cable insulation thickness for a plastic-on-wire extrusion process. The simulink model compares and demonstrates the performance between different control strategies like cascade control scheme with an outer loop measuring the plastic insulation thickness right after the cooling path and an inner loop measuring the line speed of the insulated cable. A conventional PI controllers were investigated for the plastic insulation thickness controller and for the line speed. Unfortunately the performance of the plastic insulation thickness PI control is limited by the presence of the process dead time in the outer loop.
