Enabling computers to understand handwritten texts is one of the most fascinating topics in the area of digital image processing. This is called Optical Character Recognition (OCR). It allows convenient processing of handwritten texts for both human and computers. It saves time and reduces cost when in many applications. The major objective of this project is to design and develop an OCR system for Arabic handwriting. The system was designed to perform 4 steps: reading an image, segmenting it using the thresholding technique, extracting image features, and then recognizing the letter. The chosen features were the 3 regional descriptors: number of connected components, number of holes, and Euler number. An additional 4th descriptor has been proposed. It
